The sixth chakra edition — Intuition, Imagination, Dreams, Light
On our exploration through the chakras, we have journeyed upward from the root chakra, along the spine to the head. Now, we are coming to rest at the 6th chakra, located in the area between the eyes, and what lies beneath: the pineal gland, the third eye. This invisible yet powerful eye has the ability to see beyond what the physical eyes can perceive, envisioning what is hidden, dreaming things into existence, seeing beyond the veil, and beyond this physical realm.

THE FIFTH CHAKRA EDITION
ETHER – SOUND – FIND YOUR VOICE – GOOD VIBRATIONS
We have ventured all the way up the spine, from the root, through the sacral, the solar plexus, and the heart. Carried by our breath, we arrive at the fifth chakra. This narrow bridge at the throat connects the lower and upper chakras, linking the emotional and the rational. The throat also connects us to the outer world through communication. It is here at the crossroads that the inside comes out.

In our second issue we move up the spine, from the first chakra—the root, to the second chakra—the sacrum. We go from solid—earth—to liquid—WATER. Very much like the journey of this issue, the realm of the second chakra Svadhisthana , is one of movement, fluidity, pleasure, creation and emotions. To not get stuck, our emotions need to flow like water—the element of the second chakra. “Water holds vast cognitive, emotional, psychological and social benefits:” a concept put forth by scientist and activist Dr.Wallace J Nichols in Blue Mind , which resonates throughout this issue. We spoke with some of today’s leading water gods and goddesses. We explore how they move with, learn from, cherish and protect the most vital element of life.
GUILT is the challenge of the second chakra. Like an internal alarm calling to take responsibility for our actions, guilt denotes a specific kind of awareness. We polled our contributors, and one of the top-cited reasons for daily guilt is not recycling. Close behind are giving into cravings, not being present for family and friends (and pets), making excuses, snoozing, leaving projects unfinished, and gossiping. These are behaviors few can deny indulging in from time to time. But experiencing guilt too often hinders us from being here, present in the current moment, and enjoying it. To experience the now, to feel pleasure, to have fun and to connect with self and others are integral functions of the second chakra. Which brings us to the topic of SEX. Sex is the primal essential life force of connection. Sex provides release and satisfaction. For too long the visual fantasy of porn has separated out the physical aspects from the emotional, creating a disconnect from the viewer’s pleasure. In these pages, we talk to a feminist/sensualist pornographer who is working to inject empathy into her films, and reconnect viewers to fantasy and back to themselves.
One of the big lessons learned is there are many paths to a balanced sacral chakra. From strolling in a natural landscape to shaking your hips to a bumping beat, it’s about giving yourself permission to feel and be—just as you are.

The first chakra – Los Angeles
Our first issue is dedicated to the first chakra, the root, Muladhara. We start our journey at the beginning, the base of the spine, we get down to earth (the element of the 1st chakra). We dig our roots deep in the ground in order to grow tall. What is it to be grounded, to be rooted? How can we achieve a sense of belonging, how can we let go and trust that we’ve got this?
We explore one of the biggest challenges of being alive - the demon of the first chakra - fear. All humans on this planet we call home have the same right to be here and we all fight for the same thing: to stay in the game. Fear is one of the most primal emotions - it helps us define danger and keep us alive. But fear is also a monster of the mind. How can we differentiate real and imagined danger? How can we get through it and liberate ourselves from the unnecessary fear that limit and blocks us? The fear of flying, of snakes, the fear of failure, of making a fool of ourselves?
We traveled to the wellness mecca of Los Angeles to get out of our comfort zones and face our fears. We slept under the stars, got naked with strangers, immersed ourselves in cold water, breathed, chanted, danced, sweated, cried and laughed. We even walked out of a class or two when we just couldn’t take it anymore, but it was all part of the journey.
And along the way we met the “evangelists” of this city of angels; the practitioners, movement artists, healers and nourishers who dedicate their lives to making ours better. They guided us through the first part of this journey in a way we hope we will inspire you. Get you moving. Challenge your fears. Get you out of your comfort zones and into the Human Shift.
