On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), this book looks back at the major crises of the last five decades. Through the photos and words of those who lived through these events, it bears witness to the difficult mission of providing assistance.
This book is the result of a collaboration between Magnum Photos and Médecins Sans Frontières. It was born of encounters that took place in the midst of crisis; whether in the world’s most remote regions, or in areas covered by international cameras and media. Humanitarians, photographers and journalists share more than an ethic: they have commitment as a driving force, independence as a conviction, and the desire to be there - to see and hear the reality of conflicts, epidemics and natural disasters, in order to share the views and voices of the victims.
Collectively, we probed our archives and our memories. And as the world is constantly on the move, we have also documented current crises. A historical book, made of our common experiences. A unique book, to revisit the last fifty years - right up to the present day.
