Archives are always, in one way or another, associated with memory. In our time, the concept of archive is once again in the spotlight. The role of museums is being criticized, and Eurocentric museum practices built on acquisitions and archiving are changing. Archives are spaces characterized by power, by cultural hierarchies and patterns, but they can also be tools for recording and taking care of unknown histories and remnants of lived life. Sometimes they encourage us to remember a little differently.
In the publication Ephemeral matters. Into the fashion archive, we have collected five archives which together show a varied selection of fleeting - or ephemeral - objects from the history of fashion. Join the creative backrooms and get a glimpse of the mechanisms behind the creations and an insight into important discussions from the fashion field, which both reflect the society we live in, and which can provide new perspectives on history.
