When reality seems to elude us and something surprising, otherworldly, uncanny, or pleasantly unexpected happens, we might exclaim, “It’s magic!" Something has occurred before our eyes that defies the expected and how we perceive reality. Then, in the face of what seems to be a miraculous or marvelous alternative, we start thinking about the supernatural, the irrational, or even occult power. Is magic a possible way, combined with all other forms of creativity, art and fashion, to re-enchant the world - a world increasingly anxious, dark and chaotic, a world more and more deprived of mystery and beauty?
Are such experiences an illusion within reality? Can reality be modified or manipulated? Or are there mysterious forces beyond our comprehension? With magic, the reality becomes ambiguous: one reality conceals another, the visible world contains an invisible one. Perhaps something lurks behind appearances: a secret knowledge, tricks played on the mind by arcane spirits, occult forces, or unknown powers. In the face of seemingly magical phenomena, we feel both fear and fascination. We sense a possible reconciliation between ourselves and the world, a possible harmony between us in the world: perhaps we are not alone in this chaotic, materialist world, nor in the social arbitrariness that defines our species; perhaps there is a secret world behind this world.
