Draft001 is an alternative European collective and independent publication established in 2019 in Paris. Their commitment extends beyond the conventional boundaries of fashion, art, and music, challenging prevailing methodologies and disrupting the status-quo. Two printed issues, "Big Bang" (2021) and "Parade" (2023), have already been released and are available worldwide.
Each edition, to date, has brought together 150 to 200 artists at various stages of their creative journey. Rooted in a desire to forge intersections within creative communities, Draft001's approach paints a portrait of an emerging art scene challenging and displacing conventional notions upheld by creative institutions. Their pages showcase an abundance of artists, dispelling the confines of "untrodden paths" and highlighting the dynamic shifts that influence mainstream cultures.
With this endeavor, Draft001's co-founders Réda Ait & Pierre de Monès express their vision for a world that is diverse, vibrant, united, in constant motion, and intentional about the future. Hors-Champs issue coming May 2024.
For this new edition, the Draft001 editorial team reflects on hors-champ, a French expression first used to describe cinematic and photographic dispositive that roughly translates « into off-camera», « off-screen », « out of range » and « out of focus ». Using this frame as a visual and conceptual guide for our investigation, we will focus on work by artists, cultural actors and activists who challenge and reconfigure the organization of mainstream artistic and social spheres. We set our eyes on the peripheral, and create a space to let those who inhabit it (whether Black and POC community, queer people, or people from the Global South) speak.
Notably we will explore questions such as: How is the dominant culture sustained? Who benefits from it? Which tools are used to maintain power dynamics? How do we juggle with our own relationship with the center and power? How can we escape from the fixed representations it imposes, the places it assigns us to? And more crucially, what are some reference points, outside of this center, to build new relations and desirable worlds?
